EFFECT OF PRE-INJECTION ON THE PERFORMANCE OF A DIESEL ENGINE FUELED WITH BIOGAS

In this work, an experimental investigation was performed to study the effect of pre-injection on the performance of a diesel engine fuelled with gaseous fuel under different loads. The engine tests were carried out on a single-cylinder compression ignition engine (type AVL 5402) equipped with common rail injection system. The experiments were investigated at 1500 rpm. The biogas, composed of 60% methane (CH4) and 40% carbon dioxide (CO2), is the primary fuel. It is mixed with air in the engine intake manifold. The combustion characteristics and performance of the dual-fuel mode (diesel / biogas) are compared with the case of single injection under both operation modes. Experimental results have shown that under dual-fuel mode, the presence of pre-injection leads to higher cylinder pressure in comparison with the case of single injection. Moreover, the strategy of pre-injection is beneficial for reducing NOx emissions and improving performance.
