THE INDOOR AIR QUALITY IN A PUBLIC TRANSPORT VEHICLE ON METROBUS LINE: CARBON DIOXIDE, TEMPERATURE AND RELATIVE HUMIDITY MEASUREMENTS

Because of the increase of fossil fuel prices and the traffic density of the big cities, the importance of public transportation is increasing day by day. Managements of the municipalities are trying to find the alternative solutions, but the most suitable method is traditional internal combustion motor vehicles for passenger density and existing transportation infrastructure. The inside air quality of buses drops during use on business entry and departure times, when the passenger and traffic intensity will be high. Comfort of passenger will be decreased according to this situation. Ventilation systems of heavily used public transport vehicles are critically important.

In this study, carbon dioxide, temperature and relative humidity measurements were done for investigating the indoor air quality on a public transport vehicle which used on the metrobus line and belong to the Istanbul Electricity, Tramway and Tunnel General Management of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The vehicle was marked M3007 has been selected for measurements. It has been used about 10 years and has traveled over 1 million km. Measurements were initiated on May 22, 2017 and ended on November 03, 2017. The selected vehicle is articulated, four-axle and low flow and can carry 165 passengers at a time with 43(+1) seats and 122 straphangers. Dimensions of vehicle are 19,54 meters long, 2,55 meters wide, 3,155 meters high and is the longest vehicle in corporation. The internal height of the vehicle is 2,313 meters. The empty indoor air capacity is approximately 81m³. The general management of Istanbul Electricity, Tramway and Tunnel has made improvements in the vehicle ventilation system at the beginning of 2013.

The measurements showed that, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air was mostly around 1200ppm and the relative humidity was above 50% between 06.00-10.00 hours and between 17.00-21.00 hours. It is recommended to change the ventilation suction grill filters more frequently and reopen the clean air bladders.
