DETERMINATION OF THE DAMPING CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTATIONAL BODY-IN-WHITE MODELS

Although its effects are clear and observable, the physics of damping is not well understood, yet. In the current practice, the computational body-in-white (BIW) models are updated using the experimental modal models. These experimental modal models have complex damping characteristics, while the computational BIW models are undamped, or they have arbitrarily assigned damping values. Instead of this approach, the current study offers to use the identified damping values in the computational BIW models. It is shown that damping can be identified using the frequency response functions (FRFs) measured during the experimentation. A case study is also conducted to demonstrate that the proposed method is effective.
