A DESIGN APPROACH FOR ROBUST PRODUCTION IN AUTOMOTIVE BODY ENGINEERING

Body design process has several boundary conditions such as design rules, product validations and product feasibility. Therefore design output is a crucial step for product development, since design must guarantee an effective production. Production also have some variabilities which coming from press production conditions, material and environmental conditions that may called process window. Therefore design output must cover that process window for robust production. In this study, design for robust production concept is carried out for developing a body side panel with a difficult style shape. In general approach stamping process simulations and feasibility studies are done only for one mechanical properties of sheet metal. However in process window, mechanical properties can vary in a material scatter. Therefore part design and stamping process must cover such kinds of variability. Product design has to be suitable not only for a single value but also for lower and upper limits of sheet metal for mechanical properties. This study covers all engineering activities with the aspect of stamping technology for a robust body side design. Stamping process is carried out not only for a single material properties but also for pre-defined range of materials.
